Fox Theatre Detroit Engagement Photos
An Elegant Downtown Detroit Photo Session
From the iconic Grand Lobby and marble staircase to the historic elevators and hidden architectural details, every corner of The Fox Theatre offers something special. If you’ve been dreaming of having iconic, editorial, bold photos taken in an incredible spot, look no further. This session shows why The Fox Theatre is one of my favorite places to photograph couples in downtown Detroit.
I recently had the chance to take some photos inside one of Detroit's most iconic landmarks. Let me tell you, every space offered something completely different. Whether you're planning engagement photos, your wedding photos, or just want some really elegant portraits taken of you and your boo…go to the Fox Theatre.
A Brief History of Detroit's Fox Theatre
The Fox Theatre first welcomed guests in 1928 and became one of Detroit's most recognizable landmarks. Designed by renowned theater architect C. Howard Crane, and opened by William and Eva Fox, the theater quickly became one of downtown Detroit's crown jewels.
Nearly a century later, it continues to host a diverse range of events, from Broadway productions and concerts to comedy shows and private events, while preserving the breathtaking architecture that has made it an icon for generations. For couples looking for a location that feels elegant and historic, it's hard to imagine a better place.
The Grand Lobby
Let’s talk about it.
Because the moment you step inside the Fox Theatre, it's impossible not to stop and look up. You’ll have to pick your jaw up off the dang floor. The Grand Lobby is filled with intricate details, sky-high ceilings, hand-painted decorative elements, towering marble columns, and the grand marble staircase, which has become one of the theater's most recognizable features.
For this session, I wanted to, no, I needed to let the architecture shine just as much as the couple, creating portraits that felt timeless while highlighting everything that makes the Fox Theatre so unforgettable.
I always tell people that no photo truly prepares you for walking into the Grand Lobby for the first time. (I’m also a tour guide at the Fox Theatre, so I really do tell people this all the time.)
The Grand Staircase naturally draws your eye upward, forcing you to look at the entire lobby. Which is never a bad thing. It really makes you take some time to soak in every little detail of the place. No matter where you stand, there's another architectural detail waiting to be noticed. For portraits, the Grand Lobby offers incredible versatility. Wide shots highlight the building's scale, while close-ups allow the architecture to frame the couple without overpowering them.
The Grand Lobby is full of details that many guests walk right past or wouldn’t ever notice unless they’re up on the suite level. But the historic throne chairs have always been one of my favorite features. They add the royal element you need, truly capturing the king-and-queen vibes in a photograph.
The elevators
Freakin’ STUNNING, aren’t they? The Fox Theatre's historically iconic elevators are among the spaces that immediately stop people in their tracks. These elevators are still hand-operated today. Meaning there are no buttons to take you up. There is a staff member assigned to take you up to your floor. I think the photos speak for themselves as to why you need photos of this elevator.
One of the Fox Theatre's Best Kept Secrets
One of my favorite locations inside the Fox Theatre is a room that many visitors never give a second thought to. When the Fox Theatre opened in 1928, the restrooms were divided into three sections. Back then, restrooms had a smoking/lounging area, then the actual toilet and hand-washing area. This lounge is one of the most beautiful places I have ever photographed in 15+ years as a photographer. Important to note: This spot may not be available to use for photography during your session.
Planning Your Own Fox Theatre Engagement Session?
I get asked so often…What should we wear?
For a space like the Fox Theatre, I’d go with more formal attire. It photographs beautifully against the historic architecture. Think classic dresses, tailored suits, black tie, or elevated cocktail attire.
Can we photograph inside the Fox Theatre? I want my photos there!
Short answer: YES. However, The Fox Theatre is an active venue. There are shows there all the time. So, photo sessions inside the building require advance planning, permission, and a permit fee.
