Top 5 Engagement Photo Locations in Metro Detroit

From City Streets to Scenic Trails or Even Your Favorite Date Spot

As (hopefully by now) your favorite Detroit Engagement Photographer, another one of the most common questions I get is:

“Where should we take our engagement photos?”

The truth? There’s no perfect answer that’s going to fit every single couple the same. Whether you’re drawn to downtown architecture or quiet lakeside trails, the best location is the one that feels like you and showcases your relationship with your partner.

So today I’m sharing 5 of my favorite engagement session locations around Metro Detroit. From iconic landmarks to nature escapes and even a wild card option that’s all about turning your engagement session into a mini adventure.

Let’s get to it.

1. Downtown Detroit

Vibe: City, architecture, artistic, and iconic

If you want your engagement session to feel modern, stylish, and effortlessly cool, Downtown Detroit has endless options. You can wander the streets, hit iconic buildings like the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) or the stunning Fisher Building (first floor only), and capture everything from clean lines to gritty textures — sometimes just around the corner from each other.

This is perfect for couples who want city energy, a little edge, and a lot of visual variety without needing to drive all over.

2. Belle Isle – Detroit, MI

Vibe: Water, greenery, classic Detroit views

Belle Isle is a Metro Detroit staple for good reason. It’s like five locations in one. You’ve got: The red bridge, Belle Isle Casino and Conservatory, Waterfront views + the beach, tree-lined paths and open spaces, and some beautiful quiet areas scattered throughout. It’s really a great option for anything.

There’s a permit fee required for engagement photos here, but it’s well worth it for the variety and beauty in such a compact area. This is ideal if you want a nature-meets-city feel with recognizable Detroit charm.

3. Stony Creek Metropark – Shelby Township, MI

Vibe: Woodsy, laid-back, golden hour heaven

If you're a couple who loves being surrounded by nature (or you just want to escape the crowds), Stony Creek is a go-to. Think tall grass, wooded trails, beaches, and soft golden light in the evening. It’s especially stunning in late summer or fall, but really is beautiful year round. You cannot go wrong with this option.

Great for cozy, relaxed vibes and couples who want something timeless and a little wild.

4. Kensington Metropark – Milford, MI

Vibe: Outdoorsy, versatile, a mini getaway feel

Yeah, its another metropark BUTTTTT Kensington has it all from beaches, trails, scenic bridges, and even spots that feel almost up north (but without the road trip). You can explore multiple backdrops in one session, and it never feels crowded or rushed.

If you want space to move, try something playful, or just be yourselves in a beautiful place this one’s for you.

5. Your Favorite Date Spot

Vibe: Personal, meaningful, and totally unique to you

Don’t want to shoot at a “popular location”? Let’s skip the usual and go somewhere that actually means something to you two. Your favorite bar, bookstore, record shop, rooftop, or walking trail. Turn your engagement session into a date night. I’m totally down to be a third wheel it and capture the adventure as it unfolds.

Some of my favorite photos come from spots that aren’t on any top-10 list. They come from sessions like these.

A Quick Note About Permits & Fees

Before locking in a location, it’s always smart to check:

  • Do they allow professional photography?

  • Is there a permit or fee required?

  • Are there time or access restrictions?

I do help with that during the planning process. Just let me know if you have questions. I’ve photographed at all kinds of venues, parks, etc. across Michigan, and I’m happy to help make it stress-free.
